Live Entertainment
Entertainment for this year’s Midwinters’ Dance follows a rich history of amazing bands and entertainers. This year’s entertainment is provided by Kevin MaC!
Kevin has opened for industry heavy hitters Kenny Chesney, Martina McBride, Phil Vassar, Darryl Worley, Trace Adkins, Colt Ford, LeAnn Rimes, Kip Moore, The Band Perry, Missy Elliott, Blacksreet, T. Mills, Timbaland, J. Cole and Ashanti. He re-recorded a “Southern Swag” version of the 1990s hit “No Diggity” with mega producer Teddy Riley, and he has written and collaborated with some of the most accomplished songwriters in the business, including hitmakers for Rascal Flatts, Diamond Rio, Beyonce and Britney Spears. In 2014, Kevin signed his first major record publishing deal with mega producer Dr. Luke’s Prescription songs based out of Los Angeles, California. Kevin’s setlist will include many hits from many genres and will definitely keep everyone on the dance floor.

History
The G.E.R.M.A.N. Club of Virginia Tech was founded in 1887 as the Cadet Dancing Club to provide “the highest quality dances” for V.A.M.C. students. In 1892, the Club adopted the present name because its dances became routinely known as “German’s” after a popular round dance originating in Germany in the mid 1800’s. The Club provided four to five sets of dances each year through the 1970’s.
Founding members of the G.E.R.M.A.N. Club described themselves as, “young men bonded together in an effort to serve their college, dedicated to providing personal growth through brotherhood, and bound to uphold the ideals of the gentleman.”
The G.E.R.M.A.N. Club’s stated aim was “to provide worthwhile social life for the student body at the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College.”
To this date the G.E.R.M.A.N. Club continues in its fine traditions by holding formal dances for the student body in Commonwealth Ballroom in Squires Student Center. Today, the annual Midwinter’s Dance is the highlight of the social year. Members take great pride in hosting these dances for the students and faculty of the University. It is our pleasure to be your host this evening as you take part in the 124th Midwinter’s Tradition.
THE DANCE CARD
A dance card served two purposes: to list the order of the dances for the evening and to be kept as a memento of the Ball.
The dance card was a decorative book that listed the various dances with a blank line which would be filled in with the name of the person with whom the lady intended to dance. Attached somewhere to the dance card was a small pencil with which to write a name. A decorative cord was attached to the case so that the entirety could be attached to the lady’s ball gown.
Today, without the need for a dance list, the dance card has become a party favor to serve as a memory of the dance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a dress code? What should I wear?
There is no dress code, but it is suggested that guests dress appropriately for a dance. Traditionally the event is semi-formal. While some guests may choose to wear coat and tie, guests are only expected to look presentable as they are in a public setting.
Do I need a date?
Nope. Many guests have a date for the dance, but students also come with a group of friends. It is a great opportunity to meet new people.
What does my ticket cover?
Each ticket is good for one person to attend on Saturday night.
Who is invited? Can I attend the dance?
All students at Virginia Tech are invited to attend — no special invitation is needed. See the Tickets page for ticket information.
What kind of music and dancing will be featured?
The featured band this year is the Kevin MaC Band. Some guy tried to sell me tickets. Are these real tickets?
In addition to the ticket office, members of the G.E.R.M.A.N. Club are also selling tickets. If you know a member of the G.E.R.M.A.N. Club, it may be convenient for you to get tickets through him.
What is the German Club? Can I join?
The G.E.R.M.A.N. Club is the oldest fraternal organization at Virginia Tech. Founded originally as a dancing club to provide social events for the University, today the organization focuses on Leadership, Service, and Fellowship. The Midwinter’s Dance is a tradition of the G.E.R.M.A.N. Club for over one hundred years. For more information about the G.E.R.M.A.N. Club, and how to join, visit the German Club website – vtgc.net.
If we get 50 tickets and do not sell them all, do we get charged for all 50 tickets?
Nope! During the bingo and burgers night you can turn in your tickets you didn’t sell along with the money for the tickets you did sell. For example if you take 50 tickets and only sell 40, during the Bingo and Burgers night you will give your coach 10 tickets along with $200 ($5 per ticket) for the 40 tickets you did sell.
If we need more than 50 tickets how can we get them?
If you have sold all 50 of your tickets then there are multiple ways to get more tickets. Either contact your coaches with a certain number of tickets that you need, or have your philanthropy chair email gcmidwinter@gmail.com to request more tickets. Also keep in mind that the tickets are all first come first serve!
Where else can we buy tickets?
If you need to purchase tickets for yourself or a date, you can either contact a G.E.R.M.A.N. Club member or stop by the squires ticket booth. But to help raise more money for your group try and buy them from the tickets given to your philanthropy chair. This way you get points and money toward your cause. Feel free to sell these tickets to people outside of your group as well!
Do I need to buy a ticket to go to the dance?
Yes. This makes it easier for your group to sell tickets because you can sell them to yourselves!

Are we hindered in the competition if we are a very small group/very large group?
We have designed our points system to benefit both large and small groups. The most points are awarded for your fundraising amount. We have split this in two systems to benefit large and small groups. We will award points based off of who has raised the most amount of money total, along with the groups that raise the most dollar per member ratio. This way larger group have an easier time raising large amount of money but have a less dollar per member ratio, while it is the opposite for small groups. We have found this system to eliminate the bias introduced from the number of members and our points system is fair to all groups participating! So everyone has an equal chance of winning the jackpot, so go hard!
